Built as antisubmarine destroyers with only self-defence AAW capabilities, they

Four ex- British Royal Navy diesel-electric submarines acquired 1998 on 8 year leases with option to purchase. Will replace the Oberons following refits to modify the boats to Canadian standards. Two boats will be based on each coast. These vessels were decommissioned from the RN after only brief service. Builders: Cammel Laird, Birkenhead, UK, except first unit by VSEL, Barrow-in-Furness, UK.

Royal Navy designed and built submarines, now long overdue for replacement, despite upgrades under the SOUP program. Two ex-RN sisters have been purchased, one as a dockside trainer and one for spares. To be replaced by HMS Upholder class; these boats will be deactivated as their dive certifications expire. Builders: HM Dockyard, Chatham, England.

their armament is insufficient for anything beyond coast guard duties. Also are to be tasked with
salvage/diving support. Builders: Halifax Ship Yards.
